First Day of Summerfuel!

Excited to virtually meet my Session I students today for Summerfuel Virtual’s online college admissions preparation program.

Working with high schoolers to find the “special sauce” of their personal story helps us see the similarities we all share.

A valuable lesson right now and always.

Sharing In Each Other’s Stories

Sunday’s online workshops continue all summer at 4 pm. Today, take a look at the world through the eyes of this Claudia Rankine poem. Then we’ll explore second-person POV as a way to express all that people are seeing and feeling right now.

Want to join us? Email kjfitzsimmons@gmail.com to be added to my weekly newsletter.

Interested in helping your students, team members, or community share their personal experiences and perspectives in a creative way? Contact me about designing a 90-min online workshop to best fit your needs.

If you or your organization have been impacted by COVID-19, I am able to offer a limited number of complimentary workshops.

First come, first serve. Please contact me to book one or if you have any questions.

College Admissions Essay Writing

Understanding the role of the college application essay is the first step toward writing one with punch.

Thrilled to announce that I am an instructor with Summerfuel Virtual helping high school students identify what aspects of their character they want to bring forth in their college essays.

Looking for support during the college admissions process? This online workshop is a tremendous way for students from all over the world to connect by sharing in each other’s experiences.

I’m also available for private and semi-private (if your student wants to buddy up with a friend!) coaching.

We Heart Astoria

Lovely to have my creative writing class at The Astoria Bookshop (now online!) featured on We Heart Astoria.

We had three lovely sessions yesterday. Contact me at kjfitzsimmons@gmail.com to sign-up for future Sundays.

I’m also running a special this May on semi-private coaching.

Sunday Online Workshops Continue

Earlier this month, I set an intention to make my “online writing workshops and private coaching sessions as open and honest as my in-person offerings.”

Transitioning my monthly class at The Astoria Bookshop to a weekly online offering added a bright light to my Sundays. I’ve loved reconnecting with regulars and meeting new writers. We even added a second session to honor my goal by keeping class sizes small.

If you would like to join us at 3 or 5 pm today (2 spots left in each class!) or be added to my newsletter to receive info on future sessions, contact kjfitzsimmons@gmail.com.

SUPPORT The Astoria Bookshop every day by purchasing books through their Bookshop page or preordering titles/buying gift certificates directly at astoriabookshop.com.

Constructing Powerful Openings

A first page is the first impression. The first chance to make people sit up and take notice of your work.

“Marley was dead, to begin with.” A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens.

Join us today at The Astoria Bookshop at 5 pm to kick-off a new year by exploring how to write powerful openings. Through a mixture of discussion and writing exercises, we’ll take a look at various story starter techniques and use them to revise an existing piece of work.

$10 suggested contribution. BYO Pen & Paper!

Sunnyside Sip-N-Scribe

Join us on 11/14 at 7 pm for a special Sip-N-Scribe at Sunnyside Plays.

Sip-N-Scribe is a fun evening of creative writing prompts, idea swapping, and drink-sipping. The goal is to experiment with something new on the page in an informal, relaxed way, all while enjoying an evening out with your friends and making new ones.

One drink minimum (beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages available)
$5 suggested donation

Click here to RSVP via Facebook.

Push away from your keyboard, get ready to put pen to paper, and come mingle with other writers in person. No one is here to write the next Great American novel. But hey, if that happens, please include us in the special thanks!
